The Mariner's Song

The Mariner's Song

Writer/Performer Rajan Sharma navigates life experience, family history and ancient myth in a solo spoken word performance  inspired by his time volunteering as crew on a Deep Sea Challenge organised by Tall Ship Youths Trust, the UK’s oldest and largest sail training charity.

Sharma was further motivated by stories of his grandfather’s emigration to the UK.  “I remember him saying he travelled via steamship, carrying all the family’s possessions in a massive luggage trunk. I always wondered what that journey must have been like for him.”

Sharma discovered the names of his grandfather and his great-grandparents on a passenger manifest from 1960 for the SS Carthage, travelling via Bombay.  “I joined the Deep Sea Challenge at about the same age as my grandfather was when he emigrated with his family.  This was my small way of connecting with his experience, and learning more about my own heritage and identity”.

Echoing the style of the ancient Greek poets, Sharma’s Mariner invites you to brave the elements and join him on this grand quest, under the stars, into the soul and across the great unknown...  Will you answer the Mariner’s call?

The Mariner's song will mark KinkyFish's third Edinburgh Fringe and in 2018 KinkyFish will be celebrating their tenth anniversary, attributing their ongoing success and sustainability to the unique cultural and creative perspectives of the contributing members within their evolving collective.
