sad bride

sad bride

A solo character comedy play, in its own style with its own humour and darkness. A work in progress from Actor/Maker Charlotte Merriam and Director Charlotte Vickers

….. Bride, a small girl in Birmingham rehearses walking down the aisle, she wishes she'll marry a nice man- it’s all she's ever wanted but she’s not entirely sure why. This preoccupation carries into Bride’s adulthood. Throughout the show we hear from Bride herself and about her through the voices of the people in her life (her pet rabbit, old PE teacher etc). We see a person who struggles with friendships, with their sense of self, who bullies others. Somehow a level of cruelty has become a coping mechanism for her. Bride is a person for whom pressure has changed them, society’s narratives on life-long commitment, gendered expectations and compulsory heteronormativity have built in her to a point where she can no longer see herself. Will the partner she’s found accept who she truly is? Will she be able to let herself be really loved and forgiven?
